Unless I'm missing something, this answer is about ten years out of date. Gerd Müller's record of 62 goals was surpassed in November 2011 by Miroslav Klose, who went on to score a total of 71 goals before retiring from international football after the 2014 World Cup.
Müller never actually played for Germany; he played for West Germany. But I suppose, to be fair, that was a German (men's) football team.
